The Washington State Rehabilitation Council was selected as the 2024 recipient of the DSHS Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beloved Community Award in the Community Partner category. The award honors a team who demonstrates a commitment to proactive action in addressing systemic racism and fostering a culture of belonging within both the workplace and communities served by DSHS.
As part of the DSHS annual celebration of the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Beloved Community Award is presented to individuals, teams, organizations and businesses making significant and lasting contributions that continue to create an environment where diversity is respected, and actions are taken to effect the changes needed to create the beloved community. The "Beloved Community" is an ideal in which everyone is cared for and free from poverty, hunger, homelessness and hate. It is an outcome of social justice championed by Dr. King during his lifetime of activism.
An award ceremony was held on January 7, 2025. Receiving the award on behalf of the full council were Jennifer Bean, council chair, Alexandra Toney, council vice-chair, and staff members, Shelby Satko and Jolie Ramsey.
